Fall Course Descriptions
Digital Photography 1 (PGY 2800C) 4 credits
Prerequisite: ART 1201C
This course is an introduction to the practice of digital photography. The emphasis is on the production of work and will initially focus on the acquisition of necessary technical skills such as manual manipulation of camera controls and basic image editing workflow. The primary goals of the course are to begin to develop photographic literacy and an artistic practice. A digital camera (DSLR) with manual exposure capabilities and a tripod are required.
Black and White Photography (PGY 3406C) 4 credits
Prerequisite: ART 1201C and PGY 2800C
This course concentrates on analog black and white photography and will utilize pinhole and film cameras. Initially the focus is on the acquisition of necessary technical skills in printing, film processing and darkroom practices. Through projects, readings and critiques, students will continue working on critical issues in photography as well as on composition and content. Analog/digital hybrid practices will be explored. A 35mm film camera with manual controls and a tripod are required.
Topics: Documentary Photography (PGY 4440C) 4 credits
Prerequisite: ART 1201C and PGY 2800C
This course provides an introduction to documentary photography, which has the potential to be a powerful communication tool that can be used to promote understanding and social change. Students will connect their educational experiences and creative work to the broader community through documentary fieldwork projects, including an academic service-learning project working with a local non-profit organization. Students will examine theoretical and practical issues related to documentary work through readings, films and classroom discussion.
Access to a digital camera with manual exposure capabilities is required. Some projects will have the option of being pursued through analog or digital means. In order to work in the darkroom students will be required to have completed PGY 3406C, have a film camera, and purchase all the analog supplies needed.
